As we enjoy the vibrant colours of fall, Canadians from coast to coast begin to wind down their summer adventures and prepare for winter. For those fortunate enough to own seasonal cottages and boats, preparing for the cold is critical. Properly winterizing your cottage and boat will protect your assets and ensure they’re ready for more adventures when the ice thaws.
Cottage Winterization
Follow these tips to help ensure your cottage is properly closed down for the winter months.
- Water supply: Shut off your water supply and drain all pipes and water lines to prevent burst pipes. Drain and flush toilets, faucets and pipes to eliminate standing water. Add plumbing-approved antifreeze to toilet bowls and drains. Be sure to follow manufacturer instructions when winterizing plumbing systems.
- Heating system: If your cottage has a heating system, make sure it's in proper working condition. Set the thermostat to a low temperature to prevent freezing.
- Windows and doors: Seal gaps and cracks to reduce drafts, heat loss and water damage. Ensure all windows and doors are secure to reduce the risk of break-ins.
- Pest control: Thoroughly clean the cottage and remove any food that could attract pests. Seal any openings that rodents and other pests could enter, and place traps to further reduce the risk of infestation.
- Furniture and belongings: Store outdoor furniture, tools and equipment inside. Unplug non-essential appliances to save energy and reduce the risk of electrical issues.

Boat Winterization
Follow these tips to protect your boat over the winter so it’s ready for you when warm weather returns. These are general guidelines. Be sure to consult and follow manufacturer instructions when winterizing your boat.
- Clean thoroughly: Clean and dry the interior and exterior of your boat before covering it to prevent mold. Remove GPS units and fishfinders to protect them from the cold.
- Engine and fuel system: Change the oil, replace oil and fuel filters, and top off the fuel tank. Add fuel stabilizer. Flush the cooling system and replace antifreeze.
- Batteries: Disconnect and remove the boat’s batteries and store them in a cool, dry place.
- Water systems: Drain water from any water tanks, pipes and pumps. Add antifreeze to prevent any remaining water from freezing and damaging the system.
- Cover and store: Cover your boat with a fitted, waterproof cover. Ensure the cover is supported in a way that prevents water from pooling, which could lead to damage. If your boat is on a trailer, make sure it’s secure and that the weight of the hull is distributed evenly.

Don’t forget to check up on your cottage and boat occasionally through the winter. This can mitigate problems before the spring thaw. Visit your cottage to make sure all is as it should be, and if you notice any issues, it’s best to address them right away. Check your boat cover to ensure it’s secure, and clear off accumulated snow.
