Motorcycle Safety Month: Four Tips to Ride Safely

With warmer weather just around the corner, expect to see more motorcyclists on the road. Unfortunately, more motorcyclists often means more accidents, so the Ontario Road Rider Association partnered with law enforcement and safety organizations to declare May as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.  Here's a round up of tips to help you be more vigilant as a rider.

1. Start out the right way.

Begin your journey by taking the rider training course. This should be done before you purchase your first bike. When you're ready to get your motorcycle, make sure it's suitable for you. Consider shopping for a bike based on your height, weight and skill level.

2. Wear gear all the time.

Motorcycle insurance will cover you and your motorcycle if you get hurt. However, you can greatly reduce the potential for serious injury by wearing the right motorcycle gear. Always ride with a helmet, motorcycle jacket, gloves and the right footwear.

3. Practice safe habits.

Depending on what motorcycle you ride, a twist of the throttle can mean a smooth cruise or a launch into rocket speed within seconds. Just like you would while driving a car, always obey the rules of the road. Look around you and conduct head checks and mirror checks as frequently as possible. Remember that you might be in someone's blind spot so make sure to give cars as much space as required to be visible.

4. Check your bike regularly.

Make sure your motorcycle is in optimal working order. Check your tire pressure and tread regularly, replace worn out brakes, inspect your clutch and brake levers and lube your chain. There is a lot to pay attention to out there on the road, so knowing your bike is running safe and smooth gives you the confidence to ride better. Stay safe out there!
