Insuring the Farm Experience: What Agritourism Operators Need to Know

For many Canadian farmers, diversification isn’t just smart; it’s essential. More farms are opening their gates to the public with everything from weddings to hayrides, petting zoos to pick-your-own produce. But with these new experiences come new risk exposures, and a need for insurance that understands both the farm and the guests.

“It’s not as simple as just a straightforward farm policy, and it’s not as simple as just a straightforward commercial policy,” says Meghan Mackenzie Bell, a farm insurance leader at NFP. “It’s that marriage of the two.”

Agritourism blends agricultural operations with public engagement, which opens the door to unique liability risks. Addressing those risks should start with a conversation. At NFP, our brokers take the time to understand what each farm is offering, who’s coming on site and how they’re interacting with animals, equipment and buildings. It’s those details that shape the right insurance solution.

Weddings and Other Events on the Farm

Many farms now double as venues for weddings and seasonal events. In these cases, it's wise for event hosts to carry a special event policy that protects their own liability. However, the farm itself still needs proper coverage.

Liquor liability is an important consideration. So is ensuring third-party vendors carry their own insurance. Additionally, facilities that are insured for farming purposes – such as a barn – are not necessarily covered for use by the public and often require a separate policy to protect them.

Preventing Risk Beyond the Policy

NFP’s role isn’t just about finding coverage. It’s also about helping farm owners identify and reduce risks. That could mean installing fencing to separate animals from the public, adding signage or ensuring walkways are safe during the winter. Sometimes, it’s about weighing whether to offer high-risk attractions such as trampolines or zip lines and understanding what those choices mean from an insurance standpoint.

“We’ve seen losses occur with certain activities,” Meghan says. “So the question becomes: do you want to open yourself up to that? And if so, here’s what that risk costs in terms of premiums.”

Ultimately, NFP helps farm owners make informed decisions with confidence. “We’ve built relationships with insurers who understand both sides of the operation,” Meghan says. “And we’re here to help you think through the ‘what-ifs’ before they turn into real problems.”
