The arrival of spring is an invitation for spring cleaning. It’s also a good time to prepare for summer activities, especially if you have an RV or trailer. While it would be nice to simply jump inside and go, there are a few steps you should take to ensure your RV or trailer is in optimal shape for your upcoming adventures. Here are some ways you can prepare your rig for the upcoming season.
Spring prep for summer RV adventures: 7 steps
1. Inspect your RV or trailer
After removing the cover or taking your RV or trailer out of a storage facility, a great first step is to conduct an interior and exterior inspection. Inspect the roof and look for cracks, holes, tears, water leakage or damage and rust.
2. Pump fresh air into your tires
Your tires can lose pressure from cool temps and the weight of the rig, leading to deflated tires. Inflate them with fresh air and, while you’re at it, rotate your tires if you haven’t in a while.
3. Open the windows and doors
Check the hinges and rollers for creaking sounds and lubricate them so they don’t stick.
4. Electric check
Run a test of all your electrical systems, including your propane tank, outlets and lights. Inspect for interior damage or water leakage. Check the exterior lights and breaks.
5. De-winterize your water systems
If you used antifreeze through your potable water system, you’ll need to flush and drain the system with clean water. Refill your systems with fresh, potable water so you’re ready for the road.
6. Power up your safety sidekicks
Install new batteries in your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors and check that your fire extinguisher’s needle is in the green.
7. Bath time
Wash the exterior with soap and clean the interior, removing any waste and clearing any dust or debris. To protect the exterior, add a wax product.
Preparing your RV for summer can be a full weekend project — but the task is worth it for the memories and fun that such vehicles bring. Finally, book your camping and enjoy time spent in nature.
