Canadian winters may mean it's colder outside, but there are still many ways to stay active.
The COVID-19 pandemic and its ensuing restrictions have made it difficult to be together indoors. Public health officials and physicians have long said that activities are safer if they're held outside due to better ventilation.
Whether it's by yourself or you're looking for fun events to do with children, here are several ways to enjoy the great outdoors over the next few months.
SKIING/SNOWBOARDING
This is one sport that is well equipped for social distancing.
There is lots of available space outside while on the hill and catching some powder. Starter gear includes gloves or mittens, goggles, and face coverings while skis, snowboards and poles are all available to rent.
Chair lifts and ski hills are adapting to the COVID-19 regulations with mandatory face coverings. One-way directional airflow on lifts along with proper distancing protocols in effect will make users feel safer.
HOCKEY
While a lot of indoor rinks around Canada have been forced to either reduce capacity or close due to the novel coronavirus, that doesn't mean playing outdoors isn't possible.
Outdoor rinks are in full preparation mode and there's plenty of airflow. Many facilities are requiring a gathering limit, but the opportunity to get some exercise and shoot pucks remains.
Hockey is the national winter sport in Canada and this winter could be a great time to play.
SKATING
Much like the last point, there's nothing better than getting a rush of fresh air on your face while skating at an outdoor facility.
Skating is a great activity for people of all ages and abilities, and trainers are often available to ease you into the sport.
TOBOGGANING
Another fun activity for people of all ages, but especially children.
There are few better feelings than catching some fresh snow and gliding down on whatever sled you choose - toboggan, snow tubes or snow racers.
This affordable outdoor activity is fun for the whole family.
SNOWSHOEING/CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING
Both snowshoeing and cross-country skiing offer the ability to explore Canada with endless possibilities.
This option is more relaxed than downhill skiing, but allows you to be closer to your family in the process. Both of these options provide a great workout and lots of laughter.
