Group Motorcycle Rides: What You Need to Know Before Heading Out

Five Things to Know Before a Group Motorcycle Ride

Besides the feeling of wind in your hair and the smell of burnt rubber, riding your motorcycle with a group of friends is near the top of the list of reasons to love moto-life. As we enter the season for group rides, charity rides and demo day rides, it’s worth reviewing how to ride safely in a group.

Here are some important tips to refresh your safety knowledge when it comes to getting the most out of your next group ride.

  1. Ride in a staggered formation. The motorcycle in front and behind you should be in the opposite tire patch as you are. This forms a zig zag shape that makes the entire group more visible and prevents riders from running into each other.
  2. Be mindful of group size and speed. Unless it is an official organized charity ride, it’s best to keep a group ride to under six people and only ride with people you know and trust. Regardless of the group’s speed, it's safer to ride at your own pace and skill set.
  3. Communicate, communicate, communicate. Being visible and clear about your intentions regarding where you plan to go is of utmost importance. Learn and know the hand signals before you leave. Use a communicator if you have one. This lets you talk with other riders in the group, reducing surprise turns and exits.
  4. Perform gear and mechanical checks. Always wear proper gear such as a helmet, jacket, gloves, and proper motorcycle boots or shoes. Before heading out, do a mechanical check of your bike. Check the tire pressure, chain, lights, brakes and gas gage.
  5. Stay hydrated and alert. Riding in windy, humid, dry or warm climates means you can easily get dehydrated without realizing. Remember to pack and drink plenty of water. Plan scheduled breaks to rest in between rides and this also gives your group an opportunity to discuss changes to the route and plans for after the ride.

Riding in a group can make you feel like you’re on top of the world! It’s a fun and engaging experience that is well worth all the preparation. Riding with confidence means knowing you’ve prepared and that you have a plan for if things don’t go as planned.
